Members have the opportunity to volunteer in
garden or non-garden activities.

Gardening

The grounds consist of a number of different gardens, each of which is maintained by a group of volunteers. Gardeners work primarily from March to November. However, depending on the garden and the weather, work may continue year round. Volunteers work either, or both, scheduled days of Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Most join in spring, but gardeners may start at any time during the year. All the major tools are supplied, but most people bring their own small hand tools. Expert gardening experience is not required.

Please contact newvolunteers@fghgs.ca.

Non-Gardening

Non-gardening volunteers are involved in: the Friends or Government House archives, both garden and in-House floral designers, library, membership, and the website.  Volunteers also participate in seasonal activities (from May to September) such as: the Costume Museum, the Tea Room, and as Cary Castle Mews greeters

If you would like more information, please contact nongardeningdirector@fghgs.ca

Patty Grant, President, Louise Klaassen, coordinator of the Rotary Garden, and Debbie Pungente vegetable garden volunteer at the recent get growing Victoria event held at Government House.

Rotary garden co-ordinator Louise Klaassen, and vegetable garden volunteer Debbie Pungente, prepare some of the plants given away at the Get Growing, Victoria! event. These plants, started in Victoria’s greenhouses, are part of a City of Victoria program that provides food seedlings and soil-building materials with a priority to support underserved communities.
